How to Avoid Losing Your Checked Luggage

Lost luggage ruins trips. Here’s how to minimize the risk and handle it if it happens.

Use a Carry-On When Possible

The only guaranteed way to not lose luggage is to not check it. Most airlines allow a carry-on bag and personal item. Pack smart and you can travel for a week with just carry-on luggage.

Put Contact Info Inside and Outside

Luggage tags fall off. Put your name, phone number, and email inside your bag too. Use your cell phone number, not your home number—you won’t be home to answer.

Avoid putting your home address on external tags. This advertises that your house is empty. Use your work address or just your phone and email.

Take a Photo of Your Checked Bag

Before checking bags, photograph them. If your luggage goes missing, you can show airline staff exactly what they’re looking for rather than trying to describe it.

Pack Essentials in Your Carry-On

Always keep medications, one change of clothes, and valuables in your carry-on. If your checked bag disappears for 24-48 hours, you’ll survive with fresh underwear and your toothbrush.

File a Report Immediately

If your bag doesn’t arrive, file a report with the airline before leaving the airport. Get a reference number. Airlines are required to deliver found bags to your hotel or home address for free.

Most lost bags turn up within 24 hours. After 5-21 days (depending on the airline), bags are officially declared lost and you can file a compensation claim.
