Airport security doesn’t have to be stressful. These tips help you breeze through TSA checkpoints.
Sign Up for TSA PreCheck or Global Entry
TSA PreCheck costs $78 for five years and saves you hours over time. You keep shoes and belts on, leave laptops in bags, and use faster dedicated lanes. Apply online, schedule a 10-minute appointment at an enrollment center, and you’ll have it within weeks.

Global Entry costs $100 for five years and includes TSA PreCheck plus expedited customs on international returns. If you travel internationally even once a year, it pays for itself.
Pack Smart
Wear slip-on shoes to breeze through security. Put all liquids in a clear quart-sized bag before you reach the checkpoint—don’t wait until you’re at the front of the line fumbling with your toiletries.
Keep electronics easily accessible. If you don’t have PreCheck, you’ll need to remove laptops and tablets from your bag.

Know What’s Prohibited
No liquids over 3.4 ounces in carry-ons. Yes, that includes your fancy shampoo. Buy travel sizes or check a bag.
Food is allowed, but anything liquid or gel-like (yogurt, peanut butter, hummus) counts toward your liquid limit. Solid foods like sandwiches and fruit pass through fine.
Arrive Early
Domestic flights: arrive 90 minutes early. International flights: arrive 2-3 hours early. Major airports like LAX, JFK, and Atlanta can have 30-45 minute security waits even during off-peak times.

Check your airport’s website for current security wait times before leaving for the airport.
